Eclipse 2024

Yesterday in CT the eclipse, although partial, covered over 90% of the sun, causing darkening after 3 p.m. The above pic was taken soon after the eclipse began. It isn't great, but clearly shows the situation after 2 p.m. I was impressed by how rapidly the event progressed.

That eclipse definitely occurred fast. I watched the sky darken, but did not see the sun while it was going on.

Hi Neal,

I know the pic isn't great, but I was very glad to see this event. This is the fifth solar eclipse I've observed. The previous ones were in July 1972, December 1973, May 1994 and August 2017.

I am also happy to see it. The Greek philosopher Anaxagoras was among the early people who made an effort to explain eclipses in a scientific way. An astronomer named Aryabhata, who lived in ancient India also worked on developing scientific ideas about eclipses.

Interesting Neal. How did Anaxogoras and Aryabhata explain eclipses?

They said that reflected sunlight causes the moon to shine. Aryabha stated that shadows falling on Earth cause eclipses. Anaxagoras said that the moon being between the Earth and the sun causes solar eclipses. He also said that lunar eclipses take place when the Earth is between the sun and the moon. Both of those men focused on studying nature to get explanations of eclipses. They did not assume that some monster was temporarily swallowing the sun or moon.

Thanks for that info, Neal.
Those men were ahead of their time. Another example, who is very impressive, is Eratosthenes. He measured the size of the Earth with remarkable accuracy over two thousand years ago.
